Founded at the beginning of 2007, we are
a group of Atlanta-based singers and musicians
with the goal of bringing opera to a wider
audience, ensuring the continuing legacy of
an art form that we love and cherish. We are
opera for the 21st century and beyond, a fresh
new approach to a 400-year-old artistic medium.
Our works, by award-winning Russian-American
composer, Misha
V. Stefanuk, include original
music and texts in English, written specifically
to meet our goals and please audiences. Our
subjects are thoroughly researched, and our
stories carefully planned to communicate the
messages that we find enriching and important,
as well as entertaining!
Perhaps the most important facet of The New
Opera is our outreach,
including a great number of shows focused
on younger audiences. In today’s digital world
of video games and the internet, it is easy
for children and young adults to lose track
of real life, culture, music and the performing
arts. We plan to help remedy that with our
shows for young audiences, including performances
in the schools. We are also developing outreach
programs for senior homes and centers.
Our current operas include The
True Story of Wolf and Red Riding Hood,
a children's opera premiering in February
of 2009.
We are also presently writing an opera entitled
Emily, which will
incorporate the poetry of Emily Dickinson.
We also are considering opportunities
to perform our show, Or
Not To Smoke, a health-based
opera for middle school and high school-aged
audiences.
Our first season's operas included a jazz
work entitled
An American Story: George Gershwin,
an opera on the life and music of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart entitled Wolfy,
our first children’s opera called The
Kitty Who Lost Her Meow.
So, will you like us? Well, do you like opera?
Then, yes! Do you like musical theater, dramatic
theater, concerts and other live performances?
Do you listen to upbeat music in the car or
to keep you going through the day? Of course
you do! So, you'll love us! We are all of
the above! "But I don't really care for
opera...," you say. Well just wait, we
will show you a new approach that will pull
you in! And, no, we will not make you sit
for 3 to 4 hours and listen to us! We strive
for beauty and excellence with a side of brevity!
We have big plans for the future! Are you
ready to experience it with us?
