Brief
Synopsis:
In the first scene, George and Ira are working
on some music, and they discuss their recent
successes, including George's cover of Time
magazine. Scene two introduces Kay Swift,
a bright, successful musician who is apparently
in the middle of a complicated affair with
George. Next, Ira rushes in to show George
another great music review, and George then
sings of the Gershwin effect on American music
and tells Ira that one day, they will write
the great American opera. Ira, who's interest
remains with their Broadway success, offers
his satire on opera. George responds that
he does not share the typical operatic view
of love, "Why should I have one woman
when I could have them all?!" George
then exits. Kay and Ira are left to discuss
George, Kay's relationship with him and her
feelings for him. The next scene introduces
Gertrude Lawrence, a talented British singer,
for whom George wrote parts in his musicals.
They rehearse a catchy tune before all four
characters come together for a lush finale
ensemble.
